Nailite
Co. or a cheaper brand? Nailite shakes look the best to my eye because
they are finished on the bottom edge as well as the frontal view
and have deep grain details. They are the oldest most experienced
manufacturer of shakes and while many companies would release a
pattern and then quickly withdraw it because of problems, Nailite
has just been rock solid. As their product is made of polypropylene,
it is paintable if someone chose to do so. In the last couple of
years more and more competitve products are appearing on the market,
but those that look the best are the same price as the longstanding
Nailite company, so unless someone can offer similar quality at
a cheaper price, I'd stay with Nailite at this time for the best
quality shake patterns today. But the other argument goes like this..."The
gables are way up there where you really cannot see them well, so
it really doesn't matter if you use something cheaper." My
wife didn't bite on that argument at all when comparison shopping
the shake patterns. We'll see how your wife weighs in on the decision.
Vinyl
shakes are quite popular for providing nice gable accents or to
give the entire home an old style. Their higher price (like wood
shakes) tends to limit their use. Vinyl or polypropylene shakes
give an authentic wood shake look without seams, the need for painting,
and without the maintenance hassles normally associated with shakes.
Most patterns have approximately a 6 inch reveal. The most popular
pattern for us here in Washington has been the Rough Sawn Cedar
from Nailite. Nailite makes it easy to add beauty and character
to any home with RoughSawn Cedar. RoughSawn Cedar offers the rugged,
weather-aged look of natural cedar and is the perfect choice for
any siding application." To quote Nailite:" It has a well
defined grain pattern unlike their perfection smooth, and an even
line to the lower edge of the shakes. Their split shake pattern
has a staggered lower edge and is somewhat thicker giving a more
rustic look to the home.
