Shake
roofs lend a look of rustic character to Northwest homes. People often
associate the hand split look of wood shakes with the woodsy look
of the Northwest. Unfortunately wood shake roofs burn and require
a lot of maintenance. Every year we hear of some unfortunate homeowners
losing their homes to forest fires or fireworks gone astray. With
a wood roof, fire is always a potential disaster waiting to happen
and the insurance companies charge accordingly. With metal shakes
roof fires are a thing of the past. In addition, you do not have the
yearly maintenance of your hip and ridge shakes or the problems associated
with shake "curling or piano keying".
This

the homes around it. Most steel roofs have a class A fire rating
which usually reduces your homeowners insurance, while providing
peace of mind.
Another
product that deserves attention are the new steel shingles. While
they do not have the deep shadow lines of the shake and tile patterns,
they are none the less quite attractive. And they do not require
the battening that the other steel roofs require, making them considerably
less expensive to install. They have all the same fire and durability
features of the other products while be easy to walk on and to work
with.
